Daily Devotion: What’s In a Name?

Bible Reading: Hosea 1

Key Verse: Verse 6 – “And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away

Key Words: Call her name Lo-ruhamah

Hosea was a prophet of the Northern Kingdom. He speaks of its king as “our king” (Hosea 7:5).

Some 200 years before Hosea, the ten tribes had seceded and set up an independent kingdom and worshipped the golden calf as its official god. So God tells Hosea to marry a harlot as a picture of their false worship. While we hear a lot of messages on Hosea marrying a harlot, I believe the name given to his children tells us a lot about Israel’s spiritual condition as well.

In verse 4 God tells Hosea to name his son Jezreel. The city of Jezreel was on the brink of collapse. God was sending a message that Israel was about to collapse.

Hosea’s second child was named Lo-ruhamah meaning no more mercy (verse 6).

His third child was name Lo-ammi meaning no longer my people.

So what’s in a name? In the case of Hosea’s children, everything!!

I once read about a young man named Peter Eastman. Peter changed his name to Trout. When someone inquired why Trout, Peter’s response was “Because trout fishing is my passion.”

Names can and do mean something, particularly in the case of Hosea’s children. So let me ask, when people hear your name, what comes to their mind?
