Daily Devotion: Obadiah

Bible Reading: Obadiah 1

Key Verse: Verse 3 - “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?"

Key Words: The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee

The Edomites were descendants of Esau; but they were always the bitter enemy of Israel.

One of the Edomites most notable sins is when they refused passage to Moses. They as well always sided against Israel.

So Obadiah prophesies the doom of Edom; other prophets did the same, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Amos. The last mention of the Edomites was around 70 A.D. They quietly slipped from history.

From our text verse, it is easy to see that it was pride that brought Edom down. When it comes to pride, I am reminded of the words of Charles Spurgeon, “We have plenty of people nowadays who could not kill a mouse without publishing it in the Gospel Gazette. Samson killed a lion and said nothing about it: the Holy Spirit finds modesty so rare that He takes care to record it. Say much of what the Lord has done for you, but say little of what you have done for the Lord. Do not utter a self-glorifying sentence!”

What to do:
✞ Remember, it’s not a matter of “If” pride will bring you low, it’s a matter of “when.”
