Daily Devotion: Learning the Hard Way

Bible Reading: Amos 1:1-8

Key Verse: Verse 2 - “And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

Key Words: The LORD will roar from Zion

Amos was a prophet of Judah, the Southern Kingdom, with a message for Israel, the Northern Kingdom, during the time of Uzziah’s and Jeroboam’s reign as kings. His message was a message of doom for Israel. In verse 1 of chapter 1, we see the beginning of the doom with a great earthquake. God brought this doom upon them because of their false worship.

It’s interesting to note that God always gives a warning of impending doom in order that man can repent. I call these warnings God’s Love Letters.

Every city in America has tornado sirens which warns us of a tornado sighting in that area. A few years ago our area (Birmingham, Alabama) was hit with several damaging tornadoes. Not only was there the loss of property but over 200 people lost their lives.

For a while after these tornadoes, struck people took notice and cover whenever they heard the sound of the sirens, but it didn’t take long before some were back to their old ways of ignoring the warning which the sirens gave.

This sounds a lot like Israel with God’s warning. Israel would ignore and God would send His wrath upon them and for a while they would obey. But eventually they would go back to their old ways.
It seems to be a sinful characteristic of mankind. It’s a shame that we have to learn our spiritual lessons the hard way!

What to do:
✞ If we would heed God’s love warnings, we wouldn’t experience His wrath.
