Daily Devotion: Worshipping God

Bible Reading: Matthew 4:8-11 (John 4:19-22)

Key Verse: Verse 10 - “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

Key Words: Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God

The word worship is used often today in our churches: “Join us for our praise and worship hour.” “Welcome to our worship service.” “Lift your hands in praise and worship.” Yet most believers have no idea what the word worship means. In our text Satan…yes, I said Satan gives us a picture of worship when he says, “fall down.” The word worship means to spiritually lay yourself down prostrate before God. It also carries the idea to lick the feet of Jesus. It’s near impossible to lick the feet of Jesus if one doesn’t “fall down.”

When Robert Kennedy visited the Amazon, he conversed with a Brazilian Indian, who had recently come to Christ but was known to Kennedy, through a translator. “What do you most like to do?”  Kennedy expected an answer like “hunting with bows and arrows” or “canoeing.”  The Indian answered, “Being occupied with God.”

Kennedy said, “Ask him again.  Something may be lost in translation.”  But the Indian gave the same answer.  This was an excellent definition of true worship.

What to do:
✞ Lay down before God and become totally occupied with Him.
