Bible Reading: Matthew 23:1-12
Key Verse: Verse 12 – “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”

Jesus, in telling about the leadership of the Scribes and the Pharisees, says:
Do what they bid you to do but don’t do it the way they would (verse 3),
They give the hard jobs to others rather than do it themselves (verse 4),
They do what they do, not for the glory of God or the good of others, they do it only to be seen of men (verse 5), and
They love to be high and mighty and popular (verses 6-10).
Jesus goes on to say those that are truly great are servants and exalt others, not themselves.
Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled stated that after twenty years of psychotherapy, he found that people who live for self at the expense of others, eventually lose everything and are unfulfilled in life.
Jack Paar once said, “As I look back on my life, I see one long obstacle course with myself as the main obstacle.” I might add, self-exalting people will always be their own worst obstacle.
Someone once said, “No man can live happily who regards himself alone, who turns everything to his own advantage, using people rather than serving them.” You must live for God’s glory which requires you live for others, not yourself.
General Douglas MacArthur was asked, “What is the greatest quality of a leader?” His answer: “Selflessness.”
Patrick Henry shouted, “Give me liberty or give me death.”
The next generation shouted, “Give me liberty.”
The present generation shouts, “Give me.”
