Daily Devotion: Living by the Word

Bible Reading: Matthew 4:1-4 (Deuteronomy 8:1-3)

Key Verse: Verse 4 - But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Key Words: but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God

Just as a physical man needs food, so does the spiritual man. Just as our flesh needs food, so does our spirit. Bread was and is the primary food in the Jewish diet.

Remember when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray? One of the things Jesus taught them was to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Remember the young boy in Mark 6 who had come to hear Jesus teach and his mother had sent his meal with him: two fish but five loaves of bread?

After Adam had eaten the forbidden fruit and hid from Jesus, when Jesus found him, He uttered these words, “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread....” Genesis 3:19a.

Just as bread is the primary food for the physical body, God’s Word is the primary food for the spiritual man.

In Ezekiel 2:9 through 3:2, “And when I looked, behold, a hand was sent unto me; and lo, a roll of a book was therein; And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe. Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.”

Joshua 1:8, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Gypsy Smith told of a man who said he had received no inspiration from the Bible although he had “gone through it several times.” “Let it go through you once,” replied Gypsy, “then you will tell a different story.”

What to do:
It’s important for us to go through the Word but it’s more important that the Word go through us.
