Daily Devotion: Procrastinate

Bible Reading: Proverbs 27:1-10

Key Verse: Verse 1 – “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”

Key Words: Boast not thyself of tomorrow

We read in James 4:13-14, “Go to now (translated means go do it now), ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain. Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

In Luke 12 there is the story of a rich farmer who became successful and his crops became fruitful…so fruitful that he had no place to store them so he decided to tear down his old small barns and build larger barns that will hold all his fruit. Then he can retire and take it easy. He has it all planned out for this life but the problem was he had no plan for eternity. He had put off making that plan for eternity. In essence, he had procrastinated. I’m sure that after he died, he asked himself, “Why did I do that?”

Today is the day of salvation. Don’t put that off for none of us here knows what tomorrow holds.

Have you ever heard of Elisha Gray? Probably not because he waited one day too long for an opportunity. On March 7, 1876, Mr. Gray submitted his brilliant idea to the U.S. Patent Office. The only problem was patent #174465 was given to another man with the same invention, just hours earlier. Elisha Gray was just a few hours late so now we all remember Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor of the telephone. I am sure old Elisha asked himself, “Why did I do that?”

The same principle applies to eternity. Don’t wait too late or you will be asking, “Why did I do that?” So do it today!
