We read in II Samuel, chapter one, about a young man, an Amalekite, who had a big mouth. After King Saul and Jonathan had died in the battle with the Philistines, the young man evidently came upon King Saul’s deceased body and took Saul’s crown and bracelet and took them to David. He told David about how Saul was lying near death and Saul begged him to kill him, so he did.
Now, at best the young man had a big mouth and a big ego and wanted to impress David by saying he had finished off King Saul; or at worst he had a big mouth and no brain and was simply making up the story. King Saul had already died when he came upon him. But either way, it backfired and David had the Amalekite executed for killing the king.
The young man should have just kept his mouth shut. I’m sure at some point he realized that. He had to have said or at least thought to himself, “Why did I do that?”
Have you ever wished that you had not said what you did say? Boy, haven’t we all!
Like the young preacher who was visiting the hospital to see the new mother and the couple’s new baby. When he walked in he looked at the baby and said, “Well, he’s healthy but he sure is ugly!” Now, everyone in the room is staring at him and the new mother is about to burst into tears. There is no way he can undo this. He has to be thinking, “Why did I do that?”
So maybe we would all be wise to pray the prayer of David: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Amen and amen!

✞ Remember to put a filter between your mouth and your brain; because you think it doesn’t mean you need to say it!!!
