Daily Devotion: A Multitude of Transgressions

Bible Reading: Lamentations 1:1-8

Key Verse: Verse 3 – “Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.”

Key Words: Judah is gone into captivity

Judah is weeping at night, she has no one on her side to comfort her. Even her friends have turned into foes. She has no rest. Her solemn feasts have no attendees. While she suffers, her enemies prosper. But why? For the answer we have to go back to the book of Jeremiah, chapter 2, verse 13, “For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” In essence, they have forsaken God, the Living Water, and turned to false gods which have no water. They are longing for something to quench these things but have turned to the wrong source of refreshment.

I remember in youth playing basketball in a community tournament. The tournament was held on an outdoor court and we played for six straight hours. Afterward we were all thirsty so we went to the corner 7-11 store. Back then soft drinks were a dime, so I filled up on Code, Pepsi, 7-Up, Grapico, root beer and strawberry soda. After all these drinks, I was full but not satisfied. I still had that quest to get something to quench my thirst. I went home and got milk and juice but I was still thirsty. Finally, mom interceded and said, “Son, if you’re thirsty, drink water,” which I did and, as usual, mom was right.

So it is with Judah. They had drunk of the world and false gods but still had no satisfaction. The problem was they kept trying the same things over and over, and every time they came away thirsty, which raises the question, “Why did they do that?”

Today, maybe you find yourself living a life of no joy, only sorrow. If you keep trying the same thing, you’ll end up with the same results. Why would you do that? Turn to Jesus. He alone can satisfy the thirsty soul.

What to do:

If you are tired of failing, turn to the Lord.
