Daily Devotion: Faith – Works - Maturity

Bible Reading: James 2:19-26

Key Verse: Verse 22 - "Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?"

Key Words: by works was faith made perfect

Faith alone saves but a faith that saves should never be alone.

Some take this verse and attempt to prove that it is through works that we are saved. This is not, though, what this verse is teaching. It is by our works that our faith is made perfect (mature).

We are saved by faith; but if that is all we do – if we accept Christ, we go to heaven, but we go as immature in Christ. Our works for Him matures us.

My four-year-old grandson got one of those battery-operated cars for Christmas. You actually get in it and drive it. It has an accelerator and a steering wheel. It goes in reverse. He couldn’t wait to drive it even though he had never driven it before. He got in by faith believing this car would run; and he began to drive. Now he is a pretty good driver. He has matured because he put his faith to work. If he had only looked at the car, talked about the car, sat in the car, but never drove the car, he would never have been “matured” to the place of being able to drive the car. He began by faith but his faith matured as he put his faith to work. And so it is with every believer…you are saved by faith, you mature by putting your faith into action. May God bless you as you put your faith to work.

What to do:
✞ Faith grows as we put it to work.
