Bible Reading: I Peter 2:1-8
Key Verse: Verse 2 – "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:"
Key Words: desire the sincere milk of the word
Note the word milk. It carries the idea of the less difficult. So the principle is as a new believer, a babe in Christ, you don’t start your Bible study with the book of Leviticus or Revelation, but begin with the less difficult Scripture such as John, I John, etc.
The word grow means to increase spiritually. That is the goal: to grow up in the Lord, not just grow old.
I have a granddaughter who is just a month “old.” All she eats and drinks is milk…that’s it, nothing else. If we tried to feed her solid food, one of three things would happen. First, she would spit it out, reject it. Secondly, if she did take the food and try to swallow it, it could choke her. Thirdly, if she did swallow the food, it probably would cause pain. The same is true for one who is a babe in Christ. If you attempt to feed them spiritual meat, they are only a babe, they will in all likelihood do one of three things: reject it, choke on it, or have the pain of spiritual confusion and doubt. So Peter encourages the new convert to stay with milk until the time that milk alone no longer satisfies.
No, and I repeat, no new convert to Christ should be left alone. They all need someone to mentor them and keep feeding them the milk of the Word.
Never give a new convert a job in the church. Give it to their mentor to aid them in the ministry and help them grow and answer their questions.
Remember, babies cry a lot, complain a lot, and require a lot of attention; but it is worth it in the end.
What to do:
✞ Remember, babies are always more trouble than you thought…and more wonderful!
