Key Words: they toil not, neither do they spin
The word toil means to grow weary while the word spin means to spin, busy but not going anywhere and not accomplishing anything.
The principle, I think, is clear. When we grow weary of the work, we tend to accomplish nothing.
One of the ways I know I’ve stopped growing spiritually is that I’ve grown weary of the work of God. We all grow weary in the work, but we should never grow weary of the work of God.
The work of the Lord can become weary when our focus becomes seeing results. .. when we focus on numbers and accomplishment. Let me explain.
A king was walking through his garden when he came upon a pine tree that was sad and crying. “Why are you crying,” asked the king. “Because,” said the pine tree, “I’m not as strong as the oak tree over there.” The king shook his head and walked away toward the oak tree which he found to be sad as well. “Why are you sad?” asked the king. “Because I’m not as pretty as the blooming Bradford Pear tree,” said the oak tree.
Again, the king walked away toward the pear tree which, you guessed it, was sad as well. “And why are you sad?” asked the king. “Because,” said the pear tree, “I’m not as tall as the pine tree.” So the king walked away and found a daisy smiling with joy. The king, full of delight, asked the daisy, “And why are you so happy?” asked the king. “Because,” said the daisy, “I get to be in the king’s garden and please the king every day.”
And that’s really the key to not growing weary in the work of God. As long as we are living to please the Lord, we will continue to grow spiritually. While we may become weary in the work, we will not grow weary of the work.
