- Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples
to the flock.
There are three terms used in the
New Testament for the man who is the pastor.
First, he is an
under-shepherd...one who feeds the flock.
Second, he is a bishop...one who
is the chief administrator for the church.
Third, he is an elder...mature one
who counsels the flock.
The pastor should be Christian in
all of his dealings.
Below is a sample listing where a pastor should display Biblical ethics.
- In his relationship with the opposite sex, the pastor should abstain from all appearance of evil.
- In preaching, preach the Word; be instant (ready) in season and out of season. Preach the Word, not someone’s opinion.
- In personal care, be clean. Clothes should be neatly pressed; and I might add, they should match.
- In leadership, keep promises, respond sensitively and appropriately to requests. Be honest.
- With information, guard confidences. Communicate truthfully and discreetly; be tactful.
- With resources, be honest and prudent in regard to personal and ministry resources. Refuse gifts that could compromise the ministry.
- Embrace accountability…in finances…in ministry responsibility. It’s not easy for a pastor to become a slacker when he has self-control and puts himself under accountability.
- In organization, enough said.
- With staff: do good to all staff when it’s within your means to do so. Hold staff accountable for their actions.
- With the congregation: love them all. Visit them when the need arises. Pray for them often. Protect them from the world and the wiles of the devil.
- With others who are not members of your church: do not proselyte.
These are but a few of the things necessary for a pastor to be ethical in his ministry.
