Daily Devotion: Persecution vs. Pleasure

Bible Reading:  Matthew 5:10-12 and I Timothy 5:1-6

Key Verse:  Verse 10 - Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Key Words:  persecuted for righteousness’  sake

Have you ever met the person going through trials who said, "This is from God"?  If so, I can assure you that you've not heard it often.  There is a difference between persecution and chastisement.  Chastisement is what we receive from God, persecution is what we go through for God.

Most people we know are not experiencing persecution, but chastisement.  They are going through difficult times because of self-centered decisions that they have made.  The Christian understands that persecution helps to mold their character.

Patrick Henry shouted, "Give me liberty or give me death."

The next generation shouted, "Give me liberty."

The present generation shouts, "Give me."

People who live for self never succeed in satisfying self or anybody else.     ~ Trumbull

No man can live happily who regards himself alone, who turns everything to his own advantage.  You must live for others, if you wish to live for yourself.

Character is like chiseling a statue; one has to knock off huge chunks of selfishness, which requires self-discipline.  Only then does character begin to emerge.
