The Jewish people of Jesus’ day
lived by the law; therefore, if you were caught breaking the law (see Exodus
20) you were put to death. But
Christianity, which obeys the law, doesn’t desire to put people to death for
breaking the Ten Commandments. The
essence of Christianity is not law, but love.
“A new commandment I give unto
you, that ye love one another.”
It’s love that never fails, not
law.
Again, we read in John 13:34a, “A
new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another.” John 15:17, “These things I command you, That
ye love one another.” I Thessalonians
4:9, “But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye
yourselves are taught of God to love one another.”
Christian love is not an emotional
feeling. Christian love is treating
people right or treating others the way God would.
Let’s face reality. There are those who we would not want to
spend a week’s vacation with, but we are still to treat them with respect and
dignity. We are to treat them right.
Let us also be honest about the
fact that our old nature isn’t very loving nor is it lovable. Loving others (treating them right) isn’t
something we can do naturally. It has to
be supernatural.
What to do:
✞ Remember, Christianity is based upon love. Religion is based primarily on law.
