Daily Devotion: Love vs. Law

Bible Reading:  John 13:31-38

Key Verse: Verse 34 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Key Words: That ye love one another

The Jewish people of Jesus’ day lived by the law; therefore, if you were caught breaking the law (see Exodus 20) you were put to death.  But Christianity, which obeys the law, doesn’t desire to put people to death for breaking the Ten Commandments.  The essence of Christianity is not law, but love.

“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another.”

It’s love that never fails, not law.

Again, we read in John 13:34a, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another.”  John 15:17, “These things I command you, That ye love one another.”  I Thessalonians 4:9, “But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.”

Christian love is not an emotional feeling.  Christian love is treating people right or treating others the way God would.

Let’s face reality.  There are those who we would not want to spend a week’s vacation with, but we are still to treat them with respect and dignity.  We are to treat them right.

Let us also be honest about the fact that our old nature isn’t very loving nor is it lovable.  Loving others (treating them right) isn’t something we can do naturally.  It has to be supernatural.

There are 12 passages that refer to the wonderful privilege of loving others, but all of them have to be put into practice.  If we love one another we are going to treat one another right.  This means forgiving, being kind, etc.  So let me encourage you to be “Christian” by treating others right, not as you want but as God wants.

What to do:
✞ Remember, Christianity is based upon love. Religion is based primarily on law.
