I cannot say with certainty that Peter is the one who God has in mind in regard to escaping the edge of the sword. It could well be Elisha who is in the mind of God. (See II Kings 6:30 – 31.) But we do know that Peter escaped being killed with the sword (Acts 12:2-3), not by his own strength and wisdom but through, not only his faith in God but, the church’s faith as well (Acts 12:5).
There are three things we learn about faith from Acts 12.
- You can lock man up, but you can’t lock God out (verses 1 – 10).
- The action of faith causes a stir (verse 18).
- One can literally hide in faith (verse 19).
One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, “Jump! I’ll catch you.” He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness. As can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father kept yelling, “Jump! I will catch you.” But the boy protested, “Daddy, I can’t see you.” The father replied, “But I can see you and that’s all that matters.”
And that really is all that matters.
