When you think of Jephthah, what do you think about? More often than not, we think of Jephthah’s vow to sacrifice the first thing that came from his house if God would give him the victory over the Ammonites. As you well know, his daughter was the first to come from the house to greet her father coming home from victory.
Theologians have debated for centuries over whether or not this was a sacrifice which took his daughter’s life, or did it confine her to be virgin all the days of her life? While we love to discuss Jephthah’s vow, that’s not why Jephthah is in God’s Hall of Faith. He is mentioned, I believe, because of his reliance upon God to bring Israel the victory. Jephthah knew that without God, defeat was certain.
So it is in our lives, unless we rely upon God, defeat is certain as well.
A little boy was tugging at a big rock and doing his best to lift it. He was grunting and pulling but it didn’t budge. His father came along and asked him if he was having any trouble. He said, “Yes, I am trying and trying and can’t move the rock.” The father said to him, “Well, Son, are you using all available energy?” The boy replied, “Yes, Father, I think I am.” Then the dad looked at him and said, “No, Son, I don’t think you are, for you haven’t asked for my help.”
So it with us – we think we are unable to overcome or surmount some obstacle, but perhaps it is because we haven’t prayed about it. We haven’t asked for our Father’s help.
What to do:
✞ Always remember, our efficiency turns out to be deficiency unless we have God’s sufficiency.
