Daily Devotion: DAVID: THE FAITH TO HAVE THE RIGHT CAUSE

Bible Reading: I Samuel 17:12-54 and Hebrews 11:32

Key Verse: Verse 29- "And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

Key Words: Is there not a cause?

David is mentioned in God’s Hall of Faith. You could probably name half-dozen reasons for David making God’s Hall of Faith; but no reason can exceed David standing and fighting the Philistine giant, Goliath. In verse 40, we read that David picked up five smooth stones which raises a question in the minds of some: why five stones; why not one, or six, why five? The answer, I believe, is that Goliath had four sons (see II Samuel 21:22); but nonetheless, David showed faith in fighting against Goliath.

During the terrible days of the blitz (the Germans’ continual bombing of Great Britain during World War II), a father, holding his small son by the hand, ran from a building that had been struck by a bomb. In the front yard was a shell hole. Seeking shelter as quickly as possible, the father jumped into the hole and held up his arms for his son to follow. Terrified, yet hearing his father’s voice telling him to jump, the boy replied, “I can’t see you!”

The father, looking up against the sky tinted red by the burning buildings, called to the silhouette of his son, “But I can see you. Jump!” The boy jumped, because he trusted his father. The Christian faith enables us to face life or meet death, not because we can see, but with the certainty that we are seen; not that we know all the answers, but that we are known.

Always remember, if the Lord Jesus Christ is our cause for living, it’s easy to stand for right in this world of unrighteousness.
