Daily Devotion: Shimei – The Foul-Mouthed Foe

Bible Reading: II Samuel 16:1-9

Key Verse: Verse 5 – “And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came.”

Key Words: and cursed still as he came

One writer said in regard to Shimei: “that he lived to curse.” Shimei, who cursed David, knew full well that David had never shed a drop of Saul’s blood; but it was not his desire to acknowledge truth, primarily because of his family connection to Saul. There is an old saying, “Blood runs thicker than water,” and so it was in Shimei’s case. He was David’s bitter enemy only because of his “family relationship with Saul.”

Shimei is a perfect example of Matthew 12:34 where the Word of God says, “... for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”

I read the following and found it applicable:

While Ginny Dow’s father was in the hospital, he shared a room with a man who used vulgar language. Mr. Dow had a stream of visitors from church who noticed the man’s expletives. After hearing a string of profanity during one visit, several men read Scripture and prayed. When the visitors left, the roommate uncorked some more words to accentuate his apology. ‘If I’d known one of those guys was a minister, I’d have watched my $%@#! language.’

You could hear him gulp when Dow replied, ‘They’re the deacons in the church. I’m the minister.’”

But the thing about Shimei is that he cursed David knowing he was the king. What a sad state Shimei was in!
