Daily Devotion: Shamgar – The One-Wonder Miracle

Bible Reading: Judges 3:12-31

Key Verse: Verse 31 – And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.”

Key Words: Shamgar the son of Anath

We know almost nothing about the man Shamgar. He rises out of the mist, strikes a single blow for God; then, as quickly as he rises, he vanishes.

We do know that Shamgar was the son of Anath. He slew six hundred men with an ox goad, and he delivered Israel.

We can tell from the verse that he was a tremendous warrior; he was a brave man; and it is very obvious that he depended on God.

Reading about Shamgar and how he defeated the Philistines reminds me of the story of the little primary boy and his mother riding home from church. The mother looked over at her son and inquired as to what he had learned today in Sunday School.

Well,” began the little fellow, “today our teacher taught us about Moses and how he had the Red Sea in front of him, and the Egyptian army behind him.”

So the mother said, “What did the teacher say?”

Well, he told us how Moses called the army of Israel together, and how Moses sent out the F-15 fighter jets, and the B-1 bombers, and how they shot their rockets, and how Moses called for the nuclear submarines, and they pounded the Egyptians. Then he called the Blackhawk helicopters, and all the foot soldiers and their M-16s, and the army of Israel pounded the Egyptian army into submission.”

The mother, looking at her son with a look of amazement, asked, “Did your teacher really say all that?”

The little boy put his head down and said, “Well, no ma’am; but if I told you what he really said, you’d never believe it.”

Shamgar certainly accomplished a great thing!! But he was what I call a “one-wonder miracle,” then he was gone. Let us not be “one-wonder miracles.” Let us serve God faithfully all the days of our life.

What to do:
✞ Dedicate yourself not to be a one-wonder miracle, but rather, set a goal to accomplish many things for God.
