Key Verse: Verse 12 – “Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.”
Key Words: Now therefore give me this mountain
Most of us know Caleb as one of the chief spies sent out to spy out the Promised Land (Numbers 13). He, along with Joshua, are the only ones to give a positive report in regard to taking the land that God had promised to them.
As you read about Caleb, you find magnificent words which describe this man of God- wholly, faithfully, fully.
As you read in our Scripture reading for today, you can see three things in regard to Caleb.
Verse 8, he was firmly committed.
Verse 9-12a, he was faithfully consistent.
Verse 12, he was fervently courageous.
He was indeed a man who took advantage of his opportunities and stood strong on his convictions.
When I think of Caleb, I am reminded of the following story:
“Opportunity seldom knocks twice; so Levi Strauss opened the first time opportunity knocked. Levi Strauss went to California in hopes of making a fortune – which he did, but not the way he had planned. He set out with a heavy load of canvas fabric from which he planned to sell sections for tents and wagon covers. Upon arrival, the first miner saw his product and said, ‘You should have brought pants.’ The miner went on to explain how there were no pants strong enough to endure the hard conditions of mining. Levi Strauss immediately took some of his canvas and made the miner a pair of pants, and the rest is history. The moral of the story is that opportunities only become opportunities when we embrace them as such.”
I do not think that there is any question as you read about Caleb, he was a man that embraced his opportunities.
