Daily Devotion: Ehud – Victory Over The Flesh

Bible Reading: Judges 3:12-30

Key Verse: Verse 30 – So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.”

Key Words: So Moab was subdued

Ehud was a Benjamite; and just as a side note, he was left-handed. Apparently this was a trademark of the tribe of Benjamin (Judges 20:16). Ehud’s adversary was Eglon, the fat, repulsive king of Moab. He was a sworn enemy of the people of God, and Eglon built a strong coalition in order to bring God’s people into captivity. Eglon, in typology, was representative of the flesh.

Everything about Eglon reminds us of the flesh – the flesh fully indulged, the over-indulgence led to fatness. He would have been a sight to behold.

On the other hand, we have Ehud, who teaches us how God gives His people victory over the flesh. Just as Eglon was destroyed by the power of the flesh, so it can be with us as well.

A very hungry fox, seeing some bread and meat left by the shepherds in the hollow of an oak, crept into the hole and made a hearty meal. When he finished, he was so full that he was not able to get out, and began to groan and lament his fate. Another fox passing by heard his cries, and coming up, inquired the cause of his complaining. On learning what had happened, he said to him, “Ah, you will have to remain there, my friend, until you become such as you were when you crept in, and then you will easily get out.”

Too often, Christians get caught up in the passions of their flesh, forgetting that in the end they will have to pay for their sins. Therefore, no matter how alluring things may appear to us, we must simply walk away and avoid the pull of the flesh.

What to do:
✞ Remember, our flesh is not ultimately our friend but our foe, so I would advise we not love it with all of our heart.
