Daily Devotion: Abiathar – The Man Who Was A Blessing

Bible Reading: I Samuel 22

Key Verse: Verse 20– “And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.”

Key Words: and fled after David

Abiathar was the high priest of Israel. Abiathar was a man whose life, from his earliest days, had been consecrated to the Lord’s work. He was the fourth in descent from Eli. Abiathar’s name means “the father is pre-eminent.”

Abiathar’s special relationship with David can be seen in three ways.

First of all, you can see his special relationship by what he brought to David: an ephod, a part of the high priest’s priestly garment (I Samuel 23:6).

Second, you can see his special relationship with David by what he thought of David. He thought so much of David that he brought to him the ark of the convenant when David was fleeing from Absalom. (See II Samuel 15).

And last of all, we see his relationship with David by what he wrought for David. He won back from David the loyalty of the people after Absalom’s death (II Samuel 19).

Abiathar was indeed a blessing to David when David sorely needed to be blessed.

Let me ask, are you a blessing or a burden to those in leadership?

I remember some years ago recommending to our congregation that we relocate. We had outgrown our buildings. There was no more property to build on. Our only option was to move if we were to continue to grow. I had only been pastoring the people for a little over a year, and they had been in their current location for years. They were not about to move simply because I said we needed to move; but we had a deacon, Charlie Mathews, who had been a part of this congregation for years. He was loved and respected, and it was Charlie Mathews that God used to be a blessing. He simply told the people that moving was the right thing to do, and that they needed to follow and trust the leadership of the pastor...so they did, and the rest is history.

Just as Charlie Mathews was a blessing to this pastor, Abiathar was a blessing to David. Now, who are you being a blessing to?

What to do:
✞ Anyone can complain and find fault, but not everyone will be a blessing. So why not decide today that you will be that blessing to others?
