Daily Devotion: The Problem With Tongues

Bible Reading: I Corinthians 14

Key Verse: Verse 4 – “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.”

Key Words: He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself

One of the most misused and miunderstood of the spiritual gifts is the gift of tongues.

Are you aware that in the books of Acts that tongues was never given to an individual, always to groups? For example, in Acts 12 tongues was given to the Jews. In Acts 10, tongues was given to the Gentiles. In Acts 19, tongues was given to the converts of John, the Baptist.

In I Corinthians 14, the church at Corinth had a real problem with tongues, and thus they both abused and misused the gift.

  • Tongues edified self (verse 4).

  • Interpretation of tongues was a greater gift than speaking in tongues (verses 5 and 13).

  • No more than three were to speak in any one service (verse 27).

  • They were not to speak at the same time but by course, or separately (verse 27).

  • If no interpreter was present, they were not to speak at all (verse 28).

  • Women were to “keep silent” (verse 34).

  • Tongues was not a gibberish, but a genuine foreign language (Acts 2:6).

I think you can see that the modern-day tongues movement and tongues of the Bible are vastly different.

I close with Paul’s words to the church at Corinth in verse 40: “Let all things be done decently and in order.”
