Daily Devotion: The Grace Of Giving, Part I

Bible Reading: II Corinthians 8

Key Verse: Verse 12For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.”

Key Words: first a willing mind

One of Paul’s major ministries of his third missionary journey was taking up a special relief offering for the church at Jerusalem. Unfortunately, the Corinthians were not doing their part, so Paul reminds them that they were to have faith in God and give....

  • ...in spite of their circumstances (verses 1 – 2),

  • ...enthusiastically (verses 3 – 4),

  • ...as Jesus gave (verses 5 – 9),

  • ...willingly (verses 10 – 12), and

  • ...by faith (verses 13 – 24).

I read about a man who decided to give his son-in-law a check for $5,000 on the day of his wedding to his daughter. The bride’s sister was to present the groom with the money. “Did you give him the check?” asked the father. “Yes, Father,” she answered. “And what did he say?” “Why, he said nothing, but he did shed some tears.” The father asked, “How long did he cry?” And she replied, “Oh, about a minute.” “Only a minute!” roared the father. “What an ingrate! Why, I cried for an hour after I signed the check!”

I’m afraid today that there are many who do not regularly give to the work of God, and I’m sure that there are some who do, who cry as they write the check out. I trust today, though, that you are a faithful giver to the work of God and are doing so willingly.

What to do:

✞ Always remember that you can’t outgive God!!
