Daily Devotion: The Problem Of Fornication

Bible Reading: I Corinthians 5

Key Verse: Verse 1 – It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.”

Key Words: there is fornication among you

The church at Corinth was not only a divided church; it was also a disgraced church. There was sin in the congregation and everyone knew about it, but no one wanted to do anything about it. They did nothing about this sin of fornication because they did not...

  • Mourn over sin (verses 1 - 2),

  • Judge the sin (verses 3 – 5), nor

  • Purge the sin (verses 6 – 13).

We often fail to deal with sin in our lives and the lives of our congregation because we fail to see the danger this sin produces.

In April, 1988, a skydiver attempted to film a number of fellow jumpers as they all leaped from the plane and began their free-fall. The jump started well as the photographer secured some very exciting footage. The camera captured each skydiver as he raced through the air, and then opened his chute. The last segment of the film is one of total chaos as the cameraman makes a horrifying discovery. In his enthusiasm to film the dive, the photographer forgot to put on his parachute. His jump was an eventful and exhilarating trip for a few fleeting moments. The pursuits of sin can be temporarily thrilling, but the end result is death. Hebrews 11:25 reminds us that sin produces a moment of gratification and an eternity of remorse.

So I challenge you not to forget you are free to do what you want; but you are not free to choose the consequences of your actions.

What to do:

✞ Flee youthful lusts.

✞ Mourn over sin in your life.

✞ Judge sin in your life.

✞ Purge sin from your life.
