Daily Devotion: He Warned Them

Bible Reading: II Corinthians 13

Key Verse: Verse 4 - For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.”

Key Words: we also are weak in him

What an unusual statement. We normally think of ourselves as being strong in Him; but Paul warns the church at Corinth that they were weak in Him. What does that mean?

Paul was simply saying by the standards of the world, both Jesus and Paul were weak. The world certainly does not measure spiritual strength correctly. Let me explain.

I believe it was A. W. Tozer who said, “A pastor friend of mine, now in heaven, had a quiet manner of delivery in the pulpit, and a similar approach in his personal ministry. After hearing him preach, a visitor said, ‘I kept waiting for him to start preaching!’ She was accustomed to hearing a loud preacher who generated more heat than light. But my friend built a strong church because he knew the true standards for ministry. He knew how to be ‘weak in Christ’ and also how to be ‘strong.’ How do people measure the ministry today? By powerful oratory or Biblical content? By Christian character or what the press releases say? Too many Christians follow the world’s standards when they evaluate ministries, and they need to pay attention to God’s standards.”

So Paul closes out the book of II Corinthians warning the members to make sure they measure things correctly, for often what we consider a strong church solely based upon numbers, may not be strong at all. So measure right!

What to do:

✞ Measure correctly!!
