Daily Devotion: The Problem Of Edification

Bible Reading: I Corinthians 10

Key Verse: Verse 23 – “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.”

Key Words: but all things edify not

The church at Corinth had a real problem in this area.

  • They lusted after evil (verses 1 – 6).

  • They were involved in idolatry (verse 7, verses 12 – 30).

  • They were involved in fornication (verse 8).

  • They were murmurers (verses 9 – 11).

  • They failed to bring glory to God (verse 31).

Some years ago one of our school teachers loved to put picture puzzles together. Now, I’m talking about those 500-piece picture puzzles. She and her class would work on that puzzle for days. It taught the students endurance, teamwork, how to finish a task, and the reward of finishing. On one occasion they were putting a puzzle together and had it all put together but for a dozen pieces or so. But to their great amazement, when they arrived the next morning, they found all 500 pieces strewn across the classroom.

You know, putting that puzzle together was not easy, but tearing it apart was. When I think of this, I think about how hard it is to build up others, to build up your testimony, and to build up Christ for others – but how very easy it is to tear all the above down. The church at Corinth was not good at edifying, but they were experts at tearing down.

What about you? What are you an expert at?

What to do:

✞ Build up – anyone can tear down.
