Daily Devotion: Human Wisdom

Bible Reading: I Corinthians 1

Key Verse: Verse 22 - For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:”

Key Words: the Greeks seek after wisdom

As you read I Corinthians over, Paul is condemning the church for using human wisdom.

Ten times Paul uses the words wise and wisdom in an effort to show the church in Greece that God’s wisdom and the world’s wisdom are different.

Paul teaches six things in regard to human wisdom.

  1. Wisdom is not in our words but in God (verses 17 and 18).
  2. Human wisdom comes to naught (verse 19).
  3. Human wisdom is foolish (verse 20).
  4. Human wisdom will never lead you to God (verses 21 and 22).
  5. Human wisdom is confused by spiritual things (verse 23).
  6. In God is all wisdom (verse 30).

There is an old saying that is appropriate for those who use human wisdom.

He who knows not, and knows that he knows not, is a child, teach him.

He who knows, and knows not that he knows, is asleep, wake him.

He who knows, and knows that he knows, is wise, follow him.

But he who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool, shun him.”

So it is with human wisdom: they know not, but they know not that they know not.

We must apply Biblical principles if we are to make wise decisions.

What to do:

✞ Shun human wisdom – know God’s Word – apply God’s Word in your decision-making.
