Daily Devotion: The Problem Of Giving

Bible Reading: I Corinthians 16

Key Verse: Verse 2 – “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”

Key Words: let every one of you

The church at Corinth had a real problem when it came to financial giving. This became even more evident in the book of II Corinthians.

Paul teaches us several things in regard to financial giving. First of all, it’s the same for everyone (I Corinthians 16:2). Secondly, he gives us the time of our giving: “upon the first day of the week.” Thirdly, Paul tells us the amount of our giving: “as God hath prospered.”

The church can never accomplish its mission for reaching souls and maturing the believers unless God’s people financially give. Sad to say, the average church has fewer than one-fourth of their members who are actually giving. Fewer than half tithe. Most of the average church’s members are actually tippers.

I recently read about a preacher who was preaching on the need for the church to grow and expand. He said, “This church needs to walk.” A man in the back said, “Amen, Brother! Preach it! Let’s walk!” The preacher then said, “This church needs to run.” Again the man in the back said, “Amen, Brother! Let’s run!” The preacher then said, “This church needs to fly!” Again the man in the back said, “Amen, Preacher! Let’s fly!”

Then the preacher said, “But in order to fly, it’s going to take all of you giving financially.” The man in the back stood up and said, “Preacher, let’s go back to walking.”

Your church can never accomplish all it could accomplish unless you are a giver.

What to do:

✞ Try flying, but it will take your financial giving to do so.
