Daily Devotion: How Can We Do This?

Bible Reading: II Kings 6:8-18

Key Verse: Verse 15 – "And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?"

Key Words: how shall we do

Elisha’s servant was asking a question out of genuine concern and fear. The essence of the question is, “How can we get out of this?” You have to love Elisha’s answer. “We don’t need to get out of it.” They need to be the ones concerned, not us. They need to be in fear, not us.

This reminds me of the story of Missionary John Paton, who was a missionary in the New Hebrides Islands. One night, hostile natives surrounded the mission station, intent on burning out the Patons and killing them. Paton and his wife prayed during that terror-filled night that God would deliver them. When daylight came, they were amazed to see their attackers leave. A year later, the chief of the tribe was converted to Christ. Remembering what had happened, Paton asked the chief what had kept him from burning down the house and killing them. The chief replied in surprise, “Who were all those men with you there?” Paton knew no men were present – but the chief said he was afraid to attack because he had seen hundreds of big men in shining garments with drawn swords circling the mission station.

How shall we do? We’ll do fine, thank you!
