Daily Devotion: How About That Kindness

Bible Reading: Psalm 36

Key Verse: Verse 7 – "How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings."

Key Words: How excellent is thy lovingkindness

Lovingkindness is a kindness which flows from love.

The psalmist, no doubt, is filled with joy because of God’s protection from the wicked (verses 1-4). He speaks of God’s mercy, faithfulness, and righteousness which leads to his joyous statement, “How excellent is thy lovingkindness”, a joyous love that flows out of kindness.

British statesman and financier Cecil Rhodes, whose fortune was used to endow the world-famous Rhodes Scholarships, was a stickler for correct dress—but apparently not at the expense of someone’s feelings. A young man invited to dine with Rhodes arrived by train and had to go directly to Rhodes’ home in his travel-stained clothes. Once there, he was appalled to find the other guests already assembled, wearing full evening dress. After what seemed a long time, Rhodes appeared in a shabby old blue suit. Later the young man learned that his host had been dressed in evening clothes, but put on the old suit when he heard of his young guest’s dilemma. Now that is truly an act of kindness. So it is with God, everything He does flows from a heart of love.
