Daily Devotion: How To Fight A Great Enemy

Bible Reading: I Samuel 17:32-54

Key Verse: Verse 32 – “And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine."

Key Words: Let no man’s heart fail because of him

All of us have read in I Samuel about David and Goliath. Day after day Goliath paraded along the slopes of the valley of Elah throwing out threats and blasphemies like a 100-member marching band playing off-key. His armor included a bronze coat of mail weighing around 200 pounds. He had a solid iron spear, the head alone weighing 25 pounds; plus he had a bronze helmet and other sundry items he used in his battle. Goliath was the pride of the Philistine army.

Paralyzed and hypnotized, this camp of Israel sat galvanized in their tents. The only noise you could hear from the Israeli camp was the knocking of knees and chattering of teeth. Some 10 miles away, though, was a handsome, muscular teenager – the “runt” in a family of eight boys. This young man was sent on an errand by his father. This innocent errand was planned by God and it would totally change Israel forever. Now you know the outcome, with the well-worn leather sling and a smooth stone, and an uncompromising confidence in God, David introduced Goliath and all the Philistine army to the Lord of hosts. Note the following statement from I Samuel 17:50, So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. What an interesting story! From this I see two timeless truths concerning warfare.

  1. Prevailing over the enemy isn’t accomplished by using their techniques. Goliath in modern terminology would have been mistaken for the battleship Bismarck with all of his noise and bronze. Not David! He didn’t even carry a sword! David’s greatest armor was his shield of faith. In the midst of threats and overwhelming odds against him, he kept cool, calm and composed.
  2. Conquering the enemy isn’t accomplished without great discipline. To be God’s warrior demands the discipline to stand when everything and everyone around you is crying out “flee, flee for your life, flee!” Then the stone finds its mark – the victory is secure!

Are you facing a giant today? Do your ears ache from the constant threats? Don’t run, don’t try a bigger club – turn your giant over to God for He is the true GIANT KILLER.
