Early morning means different things to different people, but when it comes to spending time with God, there is nothing like “the early morning” which, by the way, according to our text is before sunrise.
This is not the only time you find rising early in God’s Word.
- Abraham rose early to spend time with God (Genesis 19:27; 21:14; 22:3).
- Jacob rose early (Genesis 28:18).
- Moses rose up early (Exodus 8:20; 9:13; 24:4; 32:6; 34:4).
- Joshua rose early (Joshua 3:1; 6:12; 6:15; 7:16; 8:10).
- Mary Magdalene rose early (Mark 16:1-2).
- The people who desired to hear Jesus came early in the morning (Luke 21:3).
- Jesus rose early (Mark 1:35; John 8:2).
There is something special about rising early to spend time with the Lord and to take care of God’s business.
There, at one time, was a television commercial that showed army paratroopers leaping from a plane and landing on the ground. A trooper looked into the camera and said, “We do more before 8:00 A.M. than the average person does all day.”
When I was a boy, my parents would send my sister and I to the family farm out in the country. It was owned by my uncle. Every morning before the sun would rise he would have us up slopping hogs, feeding chickens, and gathering eggs. Then we would eat breakfast around 6:00 A.M. Myuncle used to say, “There’s nothing quite as early as the morning” and “The early bird gets the worm.”
Now, I realize that for some of you there is something quite special about watching the sun rise when you study about the Son Who rose. How beautiful it is! Try it, then you’ll know what I am talking about.
