Bible Reading: II Samuel 19:31-40
Key Verse: Verse 32 - “Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man."
Key Words: for he was a very great man
I cannot say how many men are referred to in God’s Word as being great; but I do believe that Barzillai is the only one who is referred to as being very great.
We strive for greatness, whether in business or athletics, but true greatness is found in what we do for others for God’s glory. I am convinced that one day when we stand before the Lord, it’s not going to be the pastor of the mega church, or even pastors at all that God refers to as great, as much as it is that lay person who has faithfully served God for years.
We had such a couple here in our church. They served in every capacity known to mankind: music ministry, children’s ministry, bus ministry, soul-winning ministry...you name it Charlie (who has gone on to Glory) and Jetta Mathews did it, and did it faithfully for over 70 years. (That may be under-estimating their years of service.) I don’t think you can find a half-dozen people in this church that Charlie and Jetta Mathews has not had an impact on for God’s glory.
Bro. Charlie served as a deacon for years, and Mrs. Jetta was the perfect example of a deacon’s wife. So while I read about Barzillai, and it was very great, I can’t help but think about Brother Charlie and Sister Jetta. I am convinced that in Glory Bro. Charlie heard and Mrs. Jetta will hear one day the Lord say, “Welcome home! You were very great in my service.”
