Psalm 20 is a prelude to war, while Psalm 21 is a postscript of war. Exactly who Israel is warring against is unknown. Most scholars believe it to be the Philistines. But no matter who the battle is against, people are rejoicing because of God’s great victory.
May I confess something to you? I wonder about a believer who walks around continually with a frown on his face, as if he can’t smile.
There are three indications of a person having had a stroke. They are called S-T-R. The T stands for talk, and the R stands for raise the hands, but the S stands for smile. I am convinced that there are believers who have had a spiritual stroke because they simply cannot smile.
At a conference at a Presbyterian church in Omaha, people were given helium-filled balloons and told to release them at some point in the service when they felt like expressing the joy in their hearts. Since they were Presbyterians, they weren’t free to say, “Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!” All through the service balloons ascended, but when it was over 1/3 of the balloons were unreleased. Let your balloon go!
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., was a member of the U.S. Supreme Court for 30 years. His mind, wit and work earned him the unofficial title of “the greatest justice since John Marshall.” At one point in his life, Justice Holmes explained his choice of a career by saying, “I might have entered the ministry if certain clergymen I knew had not looked and acted so much like undertakers.”
Let me close by saying, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice.”
