Daily Devotion: What Do You Value?

Bible Reading: Mark 8:31-38

Key Verse: Verse  36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Key Words: if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul

I have observed two key mistakes people make in regard to what they value.

First, I’ve noticed at death, whether it be at our imminent death or the death of a loved one, values change.

On April 14, 1912, 10:00 p.m. the Titanic crashed into an iceberg in the mid-Atlantic and four hours later sank. One woman in a life boat asked if she could go back to her room. She was given only three minutes to do so. She hurried down the corridors, already tilting dangerously, through the gambling room piled ankle-deep in money. In her room were her treasures waiting to be taken, but instead, she snatched up three oranges and hurried back to the boat. One hour before she would have naturally chosen diamonds over oranges, but in the face of death, values are seen more clearly.

Now, while I would recommend God rather than oranges, I think you get the point that values change.

Second, I have found that people have misplaced values.

A.E. Hotchner writes:

When actress Sophia Loren sobbed to Italian movie director Vittoria De Sica over the theft of her jewelry, he lectured her: “Listen to me, Sophia. I am much older than you and if there is one great truth I have learned about life, it is this – never cry over anything that can’t cry over you.”

Not bad advice! Love people and use things or you will end up loving things and using people. Think about it.

What to do:
✞ Make God first in your value system. You’ll never go wrong and you will be glad you did.
