Daily Devotion: Are You Listening?

Bible Reading:  Isaiah 49:1-12

Key Verse: Verse 1Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

Key Words: Listen, O isles

Have you ever heard the words, “You’re not listening to me”? Happens often, doesn’t it?

Why, even God has to tell us to listen up. In our text, God is calling upon the people to hear about Jesus even before His birth. Why would God have to tell us to listen? Could it be that we are poor listeners?

Did you know that listening skills is one of the poorest areas on a students’ SATs? Are you listening? We have lost the desire to listen. In other words, we only hear what we want to hear.

The story is told of Franklin Roosevelt, who often endured long receiving lines at the White House. He complained that no one really paid any attention to what was said. One day, during a reception, he decided to try an experiment. To each person who passed down the line and shook his hand, he murmured, “I murdered my grandmother this morning.” The guests responded with phrases like, “Marvelous! Keep up the good work. We are proud of you. God bless you, sir.” It was not until the end of the line, while greeting the ambassador from Bolivia, that his words were actually heard. Nonplussed, the ambassador leaned over and whispered, “I’m sure she had it coming.”

Finally! Someone listened.

Praise God for the good listener. We all should be.

What to do:
✞ Ask God to help you be a good listener. But while you are asking, be thankful that He is listening!
