Bible Reading: I Peter 2:1-8
Key
Verse: Verse 2 – “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk
of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”
Key
Words: desire
In our text, Peter is inspired by the Holy Spirit to tell
us to “desire the sincere milk of the
word.” Now this raises an
interesting question, why would one not desire the Word of God? Well, the answer to that question is found in
the first verse. One fails to desire the
Word of God because he is full of malice, guile, hypocrisies, envies, and evil
speakings. Now, when one is full of
carnal things, he has no appetite for spiritual things. That is the reason Peter said to lay aside
the carnal - so one will have an appetite for the spiritual.
When one
goes to the Yellowstone
National Park, he will
read a sign that says, “Do Not Feed the Bears.”
Most tourists probably assume that it is there to protect humans because
many think that if you are close enough to feed the bears, you are in a position
of danger. This may be true, but that is
not the reason for the sign. The sign is
posted for the protection of the bears.
Each fall, when the tourists who feed the bears leave, the park service
will have to carry away the remains of many dead bears because they have become
dependent on the tourists to feed them; and they are no longer willing to
gather food for themselves.
I
have discovered that many believers are like those bears. They grow dependent on others such as the
pastor, Sunday school teacher, and other people to feed them spiritually and
are no longer willing to feed themselves.
Each day we must take the initiative to gather the spiritual food we
need from God’s Word; so I challenge you to desire the “milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
