Daily Devotion: Shhh!

Bible Reading: Psalm 46

Key Verse: Verse 10 - " Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Key Words: Be still, and know that I am God

We do live in a busy world which causes us to run hither, thither, and yon.  We seem to be pulled in various directions.  The truth is that we must learn to say “no” to some of the demands made upon us.  The right order of priority should always be God first, family second, and extra-curricular activities third.

The psalmist encourages us to be still and know that God is still in control, and He alone can bring order out of disorder. (Psalm 46:10)

Before refrigerators were invented, icehouses were used to preserve food.  The icehouses had thick walls, no windows, and tightly fitted doors.  Large blocks of ice were obtained during the winter and covered with sawdust to prevent melting.  This allowed the ice to last into the summer months.

One day a man lost his valuable watch while working in the icehouse.  He and his fellow workers diligently searched for the valuable timepiece without success.  A small boy heard of the problem and slipped into the icehouse to find the watch.  He soon emerged from the cold with the man’s watch.  When asked how he found it, he said,  “I closed the door, laid down on the sawdust, and kept very still.  Soon I heard the ticking.”  From this story comes our reminder to “Be still and know that I am God.”

What to do:
✞ Make sure your priorities are in order.  Put God first in your life.
✞ Re-evaluate what your life is really about – you or the Lord?
✞ Do not desire to please people as much as you desire to please the Lord.
