Daily Devotion: Faithfulness of God

Bible Reading:  Psalm 119:89-96

Key Verse: Verse 90 - Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.”

Key Words: Thy faithfulness is unto all   generations

As we study Psalm 119:89-96, we see the faithfulness of God in three ways.  First of all, the faithfulness of God can be seen in creation.  Psalm 119:90b says, “thou hast established the earth and it abideth.”  Secondly, the faithfulness of God can be seen through His Word.  In verse 92 we read, “Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.” And thirdly, we see God’s faithfulness during the trials of life (verse 93), “I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.”

The hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” was written by Thomas Chisholm, who was born in a Lincoln-like log cabin in Kentucky.  As a young adult, he was converted through the ministry of the evangelist H. C. Morrison.  Chisholm’s health was unstable, and he alternated between bouts of illness and gainful employment in which he did everything from journalism to insurance to evangelistic work.  Through all the ups and downs, he discovered new blessings from God every morning.  Lamentations 3 became precious to him, and he wrote this hymn after thirty years of serving Christ.  It was relatively unknown until popularized around the world by George Beverly Shea.

It was at a Harringay Crusade that Wilber Konkel first heard “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” and a flood of memories coursed through his mind.  He recalled the dark nights of World War II when London was nearly bombed to oblivion. Konkel wrote,  “Each night, as the enemy planes came over, we cast our care upon Him.  I quoted (this Scripture) to myself.  I used it in my prayers. Those were dark days.  At times they seemed hopeless.  It was in those darkest hours that God proved His faithfulness to me.  We were so near death.  Yet it is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.  They are new every morning.”  Have you thanked God for His faithfulness today?
