Daily Devotion: Reproach

Bible Reading: I Peter 4

Key Verse: Verse 14– “If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. ”

Key Words: If ye be reproached

Dr. Vance Havner once said, “We leave comfortable homes, to ride in comfortable cars, to sit in comfortable pews, while we hear a comfortable message which raises the question…What do we know about being reproached for Christ’s sake?”

It’s not easy to speak up for Christ and live for him if we know that reproach will come as the consequence of our words and life.

Missionary Lou Nichols writes, “It’s not easy to step up against the authorities. Let me illustrate: During his years as premier of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev denounced many of the policies and atrocities of his predecessor, Joseph Stalin. Once, as he reproached Stalin in a public meeting, Khrushchev was interrupted by a shout from a heckler in the audience. ‘You were one of Stalin’s colleagues. Why didn’t you stop him?’ ‘Who said that’ roared Khrushchev. An agonizing silence followed as nobody in the room dared move a muscle. Then Khrushchev replied quietly, ‘Now you know why.’”

Maybe it’s time we ‘speak up’ and ‘live up’ to the standard set for us by Jesus.

What to do:

Remember life is not about you and life is not about me- real life is about Jesus Christ.
