An old Oriental proverb asks, “We know the sound of the two hands clapping, but who has heard the sound of one hand clapping?”
Likewise, did you ever try to wash using only one hand? Not so simple, is it? It is when we bring two hands together that we clap, and when we rub two hands together that we get them clean.
Just as we join our hands to perform everyday tasks, so we join hands with others to do what we could never do alone. And in the same sense, we join hands with God, as one of B. B. McKinney’s well-known hymns suggests, “Place your hand in the nail-scarred hand.” When Moses complained that he could not lead the Israelites to safety, God asked, “What is that in thine hand?” (Exodus 4:2). Each of us holds within our hands some talent for service.
Doubtless you are familiar with Albrecht Durer’s famous painting Praying Hands. The two hands, arched in prayer, are those of an older man. They are toil-worn and scarred. The fingernails are broken, the joints enlarged. Durer, a German painter, was too poor to study painting. He lived with a friend, who also aspired to be an artist, but they could not make it financially. Finally, his friend suggested that since Durer was the younger and more talented, he should spend his entire time studying and painting. Meanwhile, his friend washed dishes and scrubbed floors in a restaurant. By the time Durer was an established painter with a regular income, his friend was too old and his fingers too twisted for him to paint. One day Durer returned to the room unexpectedly to find his friend in prayer, his work-worn hands folded reverently. These hands were the inspiration for the well-known painting.
What is in your hand? The one thing that all of us can do is pray.
