When Jesus taught the disciples to pray in Matthew 6 and Luke 11, He told them to pray, “Our Father.” These two words alone are our acknowledgement of our inability to meet our own needs...that without God we truly can do nothing.
A visitor to a farm cooperative in Russia asked a gnarled Ukranian how the new communism compared with the old days.
The Ukranian answered that in the old days they invited the priests to bless the fields in the spring. “But we don’t need the priests anymore,” he explained, “because we have tractors now.”
One need not go to Russia to find this line of reasoning. It can be found among any people who feel that if you have fertilizer, you don’t need faith, that if you have penicillin, you don’t need prayer, that if you have psychotherapy, you don’t need salvation, that if you have social welfare, you don’t need the church, and that if you have education, you don’t need God.
Such shallow faith forgets that man cannot live by bread alone, and that a disease-free, hungerless generation would still starve without the Bread of Life and still thirst without the Water of Life.
Prayer is our acknowledgement that we indeed do need God.
