Daily Devotion: Learning To Pray

Bible Reading: Luke 11:1-8

Key Verse: Verse 1– "And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

Key Words: Lord, teach us to pray

Luke points out four keys to prayer:
  1. Our approach: “Our Father...”
  2. Our aim: “which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name...”
  3. Our attitude: “Give us this day our daily bread...”
  4. Our atmosphere: “...forgive us.”
But the real key to prayer is being able to genuinely say “our Father.”

In Dayton, Ohio, a young couple lost a baby to a kidnapper. A four-year search ensued. They finally found, in an orphanage, a child the same age. They were sure it was their child. The hair, complexion, and characteristics substantiated their thinking. The headlines of the Dayton paper, however, read “Science Shatters Dreams.” The doctors advised the couple their blood did not match that of the child. Many people in this world look saved, act saved, even talk saved. They may be very pious people who have, for a long time, gone through the mechanics of religion, yet God is not their Father because they have not been born again.

You’ll never learn to pray until you’re born again. Dead people can’t pray.
