Daily Devotion: Pray About Everything

Bible Reading: Philippians 4:1-8

Key Verse: Verse 6 – "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."

Key Words: but in everything by prayer

A lady came one day to G. Campbell Morgan and said, “Dr. Morgan, should we pray about the little things in life?” And the great man of God said, “Can you mention anything in life that would be big for God?” Then he proceeded to point out that our big problems are very small in the eyes of God. Yes, God does care about the little things in our lives. I once heard a story which I think illustrates this point quite well, and I don’t want to sound facetious in giving this illustration.

The story goes that a Jewish man couldn’t sleep one night. He tossed and turned into the wee hours of the morning. Finally, his wife turned to him and said, “Abey, what’s wrong with you?” He explained to his wife that he owed Ikey $6,000 on a note and the note would be due Thursday. He further explained he didn’t have the $6,000 to pay. The wife said, “Abey, get up and dress. Go over to Ikey’s house and get him out of bed. Tell Ikey you realize the note is due on Thursday and you don’t have the money to pay him. Then you come back home and go to sleep while Ikey stays up and worries.”

The point is that we should pray and not worry.

Down in Ecuador there were five women praying one day for their husbands who had gone on a mission to try to open a door through which the Gospel might be shared with the Auca Indians. Five women were praying for their husbands and fathers of their children to return safely. God didn’t answer their prayer the way they expected. Five husbands were martyred. Today, however, you may ask any one of those widowed Christian women if they would now have God to have answered the way they wanted. I assure you, each one would tell you God’s way was best. The door was opened through the loss of five gallant soldiers of the Cross for the Gospel to reach many savage Indians who would never have heard of Jesus Christ otherwise. Today the Auca Indians have been evangelized and many of them are also evangelists.

Trust God when prayer does not change things and keep on praying. Prayer never fails to change the one who prays.
