Daily Devotion: Social Networking

Bible Reading: Romans 14:1-13

Key Verse: Verse 13 – “Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.

Key Words: no man put a stumblingblock

Social networking through such outlets as Facebook and texting have become very popular. Just saying “popular” would certainly be an under-statement.

My next statement will shock some of you: I do see some good that can come from social networking. It’s quick communication in times of emergency, or when there is a need to get information out rapidly. It is good for witnessing and teaching. It is also good for communicating with loved ones who are far away. The webcam is great for letting grandkids see grandparents and vice-versa. It is good for prayer requests and many other things.

But social networking also has its downside. It allows you to be courageous from a distance. Anyone can have courage when they know they’ll never have to face their foes. Social networking has made liars out of many of our youth by creating false identities, and giving out false information. Social networking can be a time-waster. No one needs to chat for long periods of time each day. Social networking makes it easy to gossip and say things we shouldn’t say.

From my own personal experience I have found that one-third of all the problems I deal with among our youth come directly from social networking. As a matter of fact, again from my own personal experience, for every blessing of the social network, there are two problems. So let me close by giving you an acronym from Paul Chappel to help each of us be effective for Christ in our social networking.
Is it True?
Is it Helpful?
Is it Inspiring?
Is it Necessary?
Is it Kind?

THINK!

What to do:
✞ Don’t be a stumblingblock.
