Daily Devotion: Secular Humanism or The Golden Rule

Bible Reading: Matthew 7:6-12

Key Verse: Verse 12- “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Key Words: do ye even so to them

The following excerpt is taken from the secular humanist’s book Free Inquiry.

“The Golden Rule, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,’ or similar words, is not a Christian invention. Versions of it occur in the Old and New Testaments (see Matthew 7:12 for one version). But versions of it also occur in many other places, including in texts that predate the New Testament and that are not part of the Judeo-Christian heritage. For example, Confucius is believed to have written, about 500 years before the start of the Common/Christian era, ‘Do to every man as thou would’st have him do to thee; and do not unto another what thou would’st not have done to thee.’”

If there are no absolutes, how can secular humanists be sure that Christians didn’t invent The Golden Rule? By the way, Christians didn’t! But neither did Confucius or any other man! God “invented” The Golden Rule, and God predates all versions of everything. John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” You can count on that!!

What to do:
✞Don’t just commit The Golden Rule to memory; commit it to life.
