Daily Devotion: Secular Humanism: A Final Thought

Bible Reading: I John 2:1-17

Key Verse: Verse 17 - ” And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

Key Words: And the world passeth away and the lust thereof

Definitions:

Secular: “Worldly rather than spiritual, not pertaining to religion. Secularism is the view that consideration of the present well-being of [human]kind should predominate over religious considerations in civil affairs and public education.”

Humanism: “An attitude concerned primarily with human beings and their values, capacities, and achievements.” - American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition

“Any system of thought or action based on the nature, dignity, interests, and ideals of humanity. Specifically, a modern, non-theistic, rational movement which holds that human beings are capable of self-fulfillment and ethical conduct without recourse to supernaturalism.” - Webster New World Dictionary, Second Edition

“Humanism is the term applied to: (1) a system of education based on the Greek and Latin classics; and (2) the vigorous attitudes that accompanied the end of the Middle Ages, represented by the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Industrial Revolution, and the struggle for democracy. These attitudes include the liberation of the intellect, faith in progress, and the belief that humans can improve their own conditions without supernatural help and have a duty to do so.” - Information Please Almanac

“Humanism is a philosophy of joyous service for the greater good of all humanity in this natural world and according to the methods of reason and democracy.”

Let me end this series of devotionals with a caution: Some years ago, musicians noted that errand boys in a certain part of London all whistled out of tune as they went about their work. It was talked about and someone suggested that it was because the bells of Westminster were slightly out of tune. Something had gone wrong with the chimes and they were discordant. The boys did not know there was anything wrong with the peals, and quite unconsciously they had copied their pitch.

So we tend to copy the people with whom we associate; we borrow thoughts from the books we read and the programs to which we listen, almost without knowing it. God has given us His Word which is the absolute pitch of life and living. If we learn to sing by it, we shall easily detect the false in all of the music of the world. Amen!

What to do:
✞ Love God. Stay in tune with Him, and secular humanism while apart from the Word, by God’s grace, will not become a part of you.
