Daily Devotion: Being Teachable

Bible Reading: Proverbs 1:1-9

Have you ever heard these words from your teenager: “Don’t lecture me” or “Please don’t lecture me”? Do pre-teens and teens really know what they are saying when they make this statement? The word lecture means a speech for the purpose of instruction and learning. So young people, when you say “Don’t lecture me,” in essence what you are saying is “Don’t teach me; I want to remain ignorant all my life!!” Now, we know that is not the case; but today pre-teens and teens in general are unteachable.

But why? Many of our youth today believe that parents and those in authority fail to understand the world they live in. Secondly, they see authority as being hypocritical – we say one thing and do another. Divided homes would be another reason. These are certainly not all the reasons but these are certainly a few of the reasons teens are unteachable.

With that in mind, let me give you good times to teach your pre-teens and teens.

1. When someone dies.
2. When friends betray them.
3. Marriage.
4. When someone is rude to them.
5. When they are embarrassed.
6. When they see or make a mistake.
7. When others are improper with hygiene.

It is important not to gossip or be critical of others but to teach during these times; and I might add, teach with as few words as possible.

What to do:
✞ Parents, teach your children, and if necessary, use words.
✞ Young people, remember it’s better to learn from the experiences of others than having to learn from your own experiences.
